Products Description

Propylene glycol, also known as 1,2-propanediol (CAS No. 57-55-6), is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₃H₈O₂ and a molecular weight of 76.10. It is a colorless, viscous, hygroscopic liquid with a faintly sweet taste and a mild alcoholic odor.

  • Chemical and Physical Properties

Propylene glycol is miscible with water, acetone, ethyl acetate, and chloroform. Its key physical properties include a melting point of approximately -60 °C, a boiling point of 187-189 °C, and a density of about 1.036 g/mL at 25 °C. It has a low vapor pressure and a flash point of 225 °F.

  • Applications

Propylene glycol serves as a versatile compound across multiple industries due to its solvent properties, low toxicity, and humectant characteristics.

1.  Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics: It is widely used as a solvent, humectant, and carrier in medicinal preparations. Common applications include serving as a solvent in oral solutions, syrups, topical creams, ointments, and as a vehicle in injectable formulations. In cosmetics, it functions as a skin conditioning agent and solvent.

2.  Food Industry: Approved as a food additive, propylene glycol acts as an emulsifier, solvent for food colors and flavors, and a humectant.

3.  Industrial Uses: It is employed as an antifreeze, a solvent in paints and coatings, a plasticizer, and a chemical intermediate in the production of unsaturated polyester resins and epoxy resins. Its derivatives, such as propylene glycol ethers, are important industrial solvents.

4.  Other Applications: It is used in electronic cigarettes as a base for vapor production, in tobacco as a humectant, and as a lubricant for food processing equipment.
